Hi Amanda,

SPAM has triggered me in the past also. Someone helped me control it by shutting the preview pane. Don't open email if you don't know who it's from, it could add you to another list, NEVER open unknown attachments--virus transmitters. There's tracking gifs out there and more. SPAM makes up most of the traffic on the web. It definitely preys on our fears, but odds are good it's not someone you know. They try to do things that look familiar to whatever you've accessed in the past so you'll mistakenly open it and leave yourself vulnerable. I don't know why they spend so much time and energy doing this but there it is.

Amanda,
I am so sorry that you've had to go through this. I just want you to know that you are in my thoughts tonight.

I can understand why you would be so upset by this, but it does sound like it could be miscellaneous spam that's happened to find your mailbox.

Claudine is exactly right, opening those e-mails sends a message back to 'spammers' and they'll continue to send you more. I've also had more 'unknown' e-mails sent to me in the last month or so - didn't even think about it until I saw your post. We had problems with that at our workplace about two years ago, now every incoming e-mail is scanned for inappropriate content. The people creating these spam e-mails are always trying to get ahead of whatever software protection is out there. That's why, after you've put on a virus checker, or spam checker, it only works for so long - the programmers find a way around the 'checks' in the software.

I just checked my inbox to see if I've received anything unusual today:
Nothing that looks like it points to a porn site, but there was one unusual one from a 'victoraduba' with the title "Business Proposal". Since I don't know who that is, I've deleted it.

Now its second nature for me, I don't use my preview pane (it can automatically open e-mail), and I immediately delete e-mails from unknown parties. A trick that the spammers use to get around software is to slightly change the content of words so that the software won't recognize them. For instance, they'll change the word 'sex' to 'S6X' so that scans won't pick it up. If you see any e-mails with those kind of mis-spellings DELETE THEM IMMEDIATELY!

There is something else you should know about - it's called either 'Social Engineering' or 'Phishing'. My husband attended a seminar on it, I'll try to find a website for you, but I think you'll be able to find something on the net if you search on either of those phrases.
Basically, it's marketing companies (but sometimes identity thieves) trying to find out as much as they can about you from your web patterns. They'll use different techniques to trick you to reveal your identity information, particularly passwords. There are ways to combat it - never go to a website sent to you in an e-mail, unless you can verify it's from a trusted source, etc...

That said, you may have a valid concern because your family could use those tools as easily as anyone else. You'll have to judge for yourself how likely that is. Do you have anyone you can trust who can follow this up with you - perhaps a therapist or a doctor? If not, perhaps you could contact a local Rape Crisis or Abused women's shelter. That way you have an opportunity to talk it out with someone else who can validate your concerns, and to support you if it turns out to be true. It doesn't really matter whether or not this was just spam, because of where you've come from its important to try to understand how much of this may be a triggered PTSD response, and how much might actually be valid. I wouldn't want you to underestimate the actual danger just because no-one else really understands about ritual abuse and convinced you it was all in your head.

The last thing you can do is contact your internet provider and possibly any government body responsible for public communication, and ask them to follow up on this. Over here in Canada there are some movements to hold the internet providers responsible and accountable for any illegal activity that is sent over their networks. At the very least, you can ask them what they're doing to block this kind of thing, and if there is any service they could provide. It could be that they think they have something in place to block it, and don't realize it's not working (although I doubt it).

Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. Please let us know how you're doing. I'm sure the thoughts of everyone on this forum are with you.
All the best,
J.

One more thing: you should disable cookies from whatever software you use to access the internet, except for sites that you trust.

You should also try to delete any cookies you already have on your PC. Under both Internet Explorer and Netscape there will be some type of option for cookie management: On Netscape:
-- Tools/Cookie Manager/
On I.E. (internet explorer):
-- Tools/InternetOptions/temporary_internet_files AND
-- Documents and Settings//Cookies
(all of the above is depending on your version).

I just checked myself, we'd upgraded some software and forgot to check this afterwards, and I had piles of them which I've just deleted.

My husband tells me that there is also a site you can go to to download free software which will scan your system for 'Social Engineering' software that's been loaded on to your PC. He says it won't clean your system, but will tell you if you have anything, and how to remove it. It's located at www.enigmasoftwaregroup.com. This site sells software called Spyhunter V which they use at my husband's workplace, recommended by their information security system.

If you have any questions or concerns and you need a trusted person, I'm sure Jamie can verify any of this.

Take special care of yourself, and be safe.
J.

Hello Claudine and Growing roots and wings

Thankyou for your replies I am trying to sort out what I need to do to stop this but with your replies I now need to find someone who I can trust to help me action the points otherwise I keep buying all these things and they are not doing what I need them too or more possibly I am not doing with them what I should be.

Its stupid but when I look at some of these words   I think spam was a horrible pink meat that we used to have fried in batter and dished up for school dinners cookies are those things I binge on when I raid the biscuit tin and I can't stop until its empty and a virus was what we catch and get time off work

Seriously though I am so grateful for your help/advice and that you didn't judge me. At times on this forum   I have disclosed something post it panic know there is no going back then read the replies and think how far I have come and after a while I feel relief because its one less secret

Take care all

Amanda
